A is for Arthur: The Boy Who Was Born in Dreams

In January 2011 I began having dreams in that twilight time just before you fall deeply asleep. The dreams were much like any dream but I was half-awake, too. I knew I was dreaming. They were strange dreams, very vivid and sensuous with lots of detail. They started out about a boy of thirteen, small for his age, who was lost and alone in New York City. It was a sad story but it didn't last long and by the next morning I half-forgot about it.

But the dreams persisted. For weeks, every time I closed my eyes at night, the boy was there waiting for me, eager to tell his story. He was not going to leave me and so I finally began writing about him. Of everything I have ever written in my life his story was the most persistent, immediate and demanding thing I ever wrote. It took me two weeks to write 12,000 words. I named him Arthur - I felt that was right - and I published his story through Kindle's Digital Text Platform as a novelette. It sells for 99 cents and in a little over a year it has been downloaded over a thousand times and has gathered some 5-star reviews.

I don't know where Arthur came from but I feel blessed that he came to me. Arthur's Story: A Love Story is, in my opinion, one of the best things I ever wrote.

This blog post is part of the April 2012 A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. Thanks for visiting.

I think that the way Arthur came to be is really cool! To get a story from dreams...interesting.

Hi, Kathleen! I found your blog through the kindle boards - really enjoying it. A lot of my stories come from my dreams. My bestseller over at Barnes & Noble, Ageless, started out as a mysterious dream about a dark figure with a doctor's bag. I had that dream when I was 22 - I don't dare say how long ago that was:)

I've always made it a point to pay special attention to my dreams. I'm sure Arthur is grateful that you wrote his story.

Nice to read about your experience. The hypnagogic state can certainly conjure up a lot of ideas for creativity!

What an excellent dream to have to inspire a story! I don't usually have dreams in that particular stage of sleep and when I do they are more sensations than anything that provides story material.
